Career Coaching FAQ
👉 1. What's the difference between career coaching and career advice?
Career coaching and career advice both aim to support individuals in their professional journeys, but they differ in approach and depth.
Career advice typically involves providing specific recommendations or information about job markets, industries, or roles. Careers advisors are typically found in schools, universities or job centres. Research has suggested that advice based on matching people to jobs based on their skills can be a risky strategy for long-term happiness.
In contrast, career coaching is a more personalised process where a coach collaborates with you to explore your career path, identify goals, and develop strategies to achieve them. This process often includes self-assessment, skill development, and overcoming challenges to ensure long-term career satisfaction and growth.
👉 2. What's the difference between career coaching and life coaching?
While both career coaching and life coaching aim to enhance personal development, they focus on different areas.
Life coaching is a ‘non-specialist’ approach, addressing various aspects of your personal life, including relationships, health, and overall well-being.
Career coaching is focused on improving your professional life, assisting with career transitions, skill enhancement, and achieving specific career objectives. It’s important to note that career coaching can also touch upon personal factors like fulfilment, purpose, work-life balance and mental health, as these elements significantly impact professional satisfaction and success.
👉 3. What's the difference between coaching and counselling/therapy?
Coaching and counselling/therapy both provide support but differ in focus and methodology.
Coaching, including career coaching, is often future-oriented, concentrating on setting and achieving goals, enhancing performance, and navigating career paths. It often involves stepping out of your comfort zone to reach new professional heights. Coaching can also help build confidence and tackle limiting beliefs, providing the client is ‘basically OK’.
Counselling or therapy, however, tends to address past experiences and emotional issues, aiming to resolve psychological problems and improve mental health. While coaching can touch upon personal development, it doesn’t delve into diagnosing or treating mental health conditions. Counselling may be the better option when a person thinks they are ‘not basically OK’, and are not in a good place to start taking incisive action.
Where appropriate, people often choose to have coaching and therapy at the same time, to focus on different aspects of their situation and goals.
👉 4. How does career coaching work?
It’s essential that any coaching process is personalised for the client. That’s why we offer free 30-minute career consultations, to design your unique coaching plan.
That said, a tailored career coaching programme typically begins with an assessment of your current professional situation, goals, and challenges. The coach collaborates with you to identify strengths, areas for improvement, and potential courses of action. that may include skill development, networking strategies, new career paths, and personal branding, including optimising your social media presence. Regular sessions provide accountability, support, and adjustments to the plan as needed, ensuring you stay on track toward your career objectives.
👉 5. How long does career coaching take to complete?
The duration of career coaching varies based on individual goals and needs.
Some may achieve their objectives in a few sessions, while others might engage in a long-term coaching programme spanning several months.
Factors influencing the timeline include the complexity of your career goals, the frequency of sessions, and your commitment to implementing the strategies discussed. It’s essential to discuss your specific needs with your coach to establish a timeline that aligns with your career aspirations.
